Press Statement of Indonesia Delegation on Asia Pacific Conference on Beijing+20 Review

Representatives of Indonesian Women in Asian and Pacific Conference on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: Beijing+20 Review

Bangkok, 18 November 2014

The representatives of Indonesian women who participated in Asian and Pacific Conference on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: Beijing+20 Review in Bangkok, Thailand organized on 17-18 November 2014 express our disappointment on the statements of Indonesian government in response to the Asian Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Advancing Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment draft outcome document which will be adopted as official statements of Asia and Pacific countries for the advancement of women's rights as mentioned in the Beijing Platform for Action +20.
We are in the point of view that the statements of Indonesian government on:

1. Paragraph 4 of the draft: Indonesia objected the statement of Australia on the review result of International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD),The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Vienna Declaration of Human Rights;Indonesia supported Iran and Pakistan, while Russia did not agree with the term sex and gender, sexual orientation and gender identity.

Paragraph 12 : Indonesia objected the term sexual orientation and gender identity together with Iran, Russia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Maldives.

Paragraph 16 : Indonesia disagree with the term various form of families and suggested to delete text on "different cultural, political and social systems, various forms of the family exist"

Paragraph 30 : Indonesia replaced term sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights with reproductive health and reproductive rights.

Paragraph 35 : Indonesia supported India to used term armed conflict which is in contrary with Conflict Social Handling Law in Indonesia.

Paragraph 43 : Indonesia rejected term sexual rights proposed by Australia.

Paragraph 46 : Indonesia rejected women inherited right in land issue.

The position and statement of Indonesian government supported Iran, Pakistan and Russia government showed the set back and obstacles to support the advancement of women rights. In fact, the life and advancement of the women rights in Indonesia in the past ten years showed many progress and achievement such as :

Regulation of Four Ministerials : Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Home Affairs, National Agency on National Development Plan and Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection Number 105/ 2008 on Gender Budget Perspective

Presidential Regulation Number 18/2014 on Protection and Empowerment of Women and Children in the Conflict Area.

We, the representatives of Indonesia women demand Indonesia government to be transparent and accountable in building diplomacy strategy to respond to every effort to advance and empower women in Indonesia.

We, the representatives of Indonesia women demand Indonesia government to be accountable to the statements that showed the set back of the agenda for the advancement of women rights on Asia Pacific Conference on Review of Beijing+20.
